Tea in TiP with Shi Pui Ng

Hi Shi, welcome to TiP! We’re really happy you’re joining us for a visit this autumn. Tell us us about your stay.

Hello! I will be participating in the Moving Data, Moving People project as a research intern, working with Rachel Douglas-Jones. I am completing this internship as part of my Master of Applied Cybernetics program at the Australian National University (ANU), where we interrogate and imagine a technology-enabled future, and to make sure it benefits all – humans, societies, and the environments that accommodate us.

Since we’re doing this interview before you arrive, what will you be working on here at ITU?

Cybernetics is the science of control and communication in complex systems such as computers, the human body, ecological systems, information systems, government and human cultures. I will hopefully be providing a cybernetic perspective to the project; contributing to a more holistic, systemic understanding of how the Social Credit System in China impacts, interacts, and interfaces.

What have you/do you hope to learn about academia from visiting another institutional context?

I am particularly interested in how different institutional contexts approach the study of cybernetics and social systems. This experience at TiP and in the ETHOS Lab will allow me to observe diverse methodologies and collaborative practices, and provide me with practical experience in applying these methodologies to the examination and imagination of different systems.

And while you’re here, how can we learn more about your studies?

Come have a yarn with me!
